Barry Community Choir - About Us
The National Eisteddfod of Wales was held in Barry in August 1968 with singers from Barry and district coming together under the baton of Clifford Bunford to form The Eisteddfod Choir. Following the Eisteddfod, Clifford set up a choral group with members of the Eisteddfod Choir - and Barry Choral Society was born.
In 2015 we decided to rebrand ourselves and the choir was renamed - Barry Community Choir. With 50 years of vocals not far over the horizon our choir has been an instrument for delivering superb music and we are very much committed to performing a wide range of song to the community of Barry and beyond.
It has been proved over and over again that singing is good for you and that the benefits of belonging to a good social group are long and far-reaching. With this in mind, if you would like to meet new people, make new friends, improve your health, and widen your horizon and SING, we would love to meet you. If you already sing then you obviously appreciate the benefits of singing.
Don’t just take our word for it – come along on any Wednesday night to Crossway Methodist Church in Court Road, Barry – from 7.30 to 9.30 and try us out! We can promise you a warm welcome, NO AUDITIONS and good contemporary music. You do not have to be able to read music to join us – so don’t let that put you off taking the first step.
We are always looking for ways to foster and promote local talent, both vocal and instrumental. We can provide the “platform” for you to perform on, so don’t be afraid to ask.
On the first Wednesday of every month we hold a coffee evening where we extend the normal break to half an hour and enjoy a chat over a cup of tea or coffee – and a biscuit or two! On this night we also hold a raffle to help supplement funds.
Our professional people are Emma Arscott, Conductor and local Barry “star,” and Sian Davies, our Accompanist, who has played for celebrities far and wide. Sian has been studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Dram and recently gained a postgraduate in repetiteurship and accompaniment. A just reward for her dedication and professionalism.
We usually have two local concerts of our own a year (Spring/Summer and Christmas-time) and also sing in the community, supporting and entertaining local groups and charities. Past performances include singing in the Memorial Hall, St Mary’s Church Holton Road, St Cadoc’s, Cadoxton, All Saints Church, Barry, St Ffrancis Hall, Golau Caredig, The Amelia Trust Farm, The Hub, Barry, College Fields, Island View Nursing Home, Bethel House, Dinas Powys, Barry High Street for the Christmas Lights Switch-on, Habanas, Barry for Christmas carols, The 3 Choirs of Barry Concerts, we have also sung in Ferndale, Llantwit Major and Cardiff. We are also a “Choir for Hire,” so if you would like us to sing for you, please contact us via the website or telephone the number below.
Whichever way you choose to “sample” the Choir, you will be welcome. If the thought of stepping through a new door is putting you off, just email firstname.lastname@example.org or ring 01446 748724 for an informal chat, with no obligation.
